About

Housed in a former Penelec powerplant, this museum tells the story of the Battle of Lake Erie in the war of 1812. Displays include a replica gundeck of the Brig Lawrence complete with shot holes from period artillery & small arms, local boat building, fishing, shipwrecks, the science & history of sailing (including ice boats), and the prow of the USS Michigan/Wolverine rounds out museum displays.

Museum Tours

A Museum tour includes a self-guided exploration of our two-story exhibit gallery as well as a docent-led tour of the full-size replica Brig Niagara (when in port).

Insight from Knowledgeable Volunteers

Knowledgeable volunteers provide great insight into life as one of Oliver Hazzard Perry’s sailors as well as their own connections to the Lake & its maritime heritage.

Touring & Sailing the Brig Niagara

Visitors may tour the Brig Niagara when in port and are able to participate in actually sailing on her during the warmer months.

Hands-On Experiences

Hands on experiences (other than sailing an actual Tall Ship!) include cannon drills on the reproduced gun deck of the Lawrence, knot tying, indoor sail handling demonstrations on a 40-foot section of Niagara’s main mast.
