Historic Preservation

The future of Erie County is deeply rooted in its past

Historic preservation is the process of identifying, protecting, and conserving buildings, landscapes, objects, and places that have historical or cultural significance.

Safeguarding these elements for the future involves adapting them for modern use while maintaining their key historic features. It’s how we honor the stories and character of our community.

Many of the museums and historic sites throughout Erie County actively participate in historic preservation. They maintain their own historic buildings and collect and safeguard oral histories, photographs, objects, and other items that help document the built environment of the past, as well as that of today.
