Dr. Mary Ann Owoc Speaks at Harborcreek Historical Society’s Annual Meeting January 24

Join the Harborcreek Historical Society January 24th at 11 am at the Township Building for their Annual Meeting and a presentation by Dr. Mary Ann Owoc.

Burial grounds and cemeteries are among the most valuable of archaeological and historic resources. They are evidence of various settlement patterns, burial practices, cultural and religious influences, economic development, social relationships, and genealogy. Unfortunately, they are one of the most fragile resources to preserve and protect.

With this in mind, Mercyhurst University professor Mary Ann Owoc recently completed a typological overview, as well as a preservation and threat assessment for all of the cemeteries in Erie County. At the annual meeting, Dr. Owoc will provide an overview of her research and talk specifically about the historic cemeteries in Harborcreek Township.

The annual meeting is open to the Society’s membership as well as the general public.

Dr. Owoc’s presentation is a lead in to a new project the Society is working on. Just over a year ago the Society received a grant from the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority to place an interpretive marker at Gospel Hill Burial Ground listing those interred there and the history of the site. They look forward to unveiling the marker in the spring.
